We spent the last week in McAllen, TX, making final arrangements for a CRWRC Needs Assessment that will happen in January. Last Sunday we checked the weather and were delighted to see it would be sunny and in the mid-80's all week. Something happened though! By Monday morning the forecast had changed to cloudy and cold. Tuesday's high was only 37. Wednesday warmed up to 57. Oh well. We're from Michigan and we're tough. Our planning went very well, we got in some fun birdwatching, and it was still much warmer than back home.
Best birding: Quinta Mazatlan, a new birding center in McAllen. Sitting in one place we saw golden-fronted woodpeckers, buff-bellied hummers, a curve-billed thrasher, green jays, kiskadees, a sharp-shinned hawk, orange crowned warblers, ruby-crowned kinglet, and more.
Quinta Mazatlan is headquartered in an old mansion, with beautifully landscaped grounds
