The trip to Sacha Lodge

The flight from Quito to Coca crossed the snow-covered Andes.

From Coca we boarded a covered, motorized canoe for the 50 mile ride down the Napo River, one of the tributaries of the Amazon..

The river is a good 1/2 mile wide, and filled with huge sandbars, so the canoe veered from side to side, maneuvering around huge logs and snags.

The jungle crowds the river on both sides, displaying the incredible diversity of Amazon plant life:  numerous shrub varieties, grasses and reeds, short and tall palms and the towering kapok trees.

A 1/2 hour walk along a trail and boardwalk was followed by a 20-minute canoe ride down the channel and across the lake.

Next post:  more about the birding.
