We got to Antigua at dawn

Families work sometimes through the night to comlpete the carpets.

They're made of colored sawdust, flowers and flower petals, sometimes fruits and vegetables...

..and even plastic mice.

The processions are led in by a host of purple-clad men--it seemed like 1000's.

Townspeople accompany the robed figures

Then come the Roman soldiers...

...leading in the float carrying the figure of Christ

The floats can weigh up to 3 1/2 tons

Baby came along

Women carry the floats of the Virgin Mary

The floats are accompanied by men swinging incense burners and sometimes children carrying flowers.

And they are followed by a small band, with balloon vendors close behind.

And right after is the cleanup crew, sweeping up the remnants of those beautiful carpets.

Oh, my goodness ! You're in my favorite place ! We lived with a family in Antigua for 5 weeks while we attended the Christian Spanish Academy for language classes. When we got back to cold snowy, black & white Michigan I would just look at my beautiful, colorful slides of Guatemala every day and cry. Wonderful place, wonderful people. I'm so glad you are enjoying it all. Love, Deb Genzink
